Pride Goeth Before a Fall and Haughty Eyes Before Destruction

I thought of a couple variations on that verse today.

As I rode to work in the rain.

I have to admit this made me laugh a little. I'm sorry. You get major, major kudos for biking in the rain.

I laughed out loud. That's classic ;)

:-) I don't even know how to bicycle... well, if someone puts me on one and gets me started, I'll pedal, pedal, oh so cautiously until someone helps me stop.
Given the previous post... well, I had to laugh. Not at you... with you. Okay, a little at you... only because I'm jealous that you are able to bike so well, even in rain. Now, would you bike in snow?

I didn't want to ruin my punchline (It's ok you all laughed at me, I was laughing at myself the whole way), but "rain" here would be considered a light drizzle anywhere else. I don't think I'd be biking in rain the way it gets dished out on the east coast and certainly not in snow!

Wuss. I stopped 2 days ago at the local country store and talked to the teenage clerk. I said it was cold. He mentioned he had 4 mile bike ride to get home. It was 15 degrees F. Brrr.

Not that I, wuss, even walked today, and it was in to the 20s at least.

By golly, I do have a grandfather story to tell. When I graduated from law school in '63 and started with General Electric in Schenectady, I bought a bike. It was two miles to work, and I had to bike for four months -- rain, snow, sleet. I had no choice.

Why didn't I drive? It's hard to believe now how things were then. After I got my first paycheck, I went to the VW agency and made a small downpayment on a new VW. Then, I had to wait five and a half months for my car to be manufactured and shipped from Wolfsburg.

I can still remember the first day I had the car. Heavy snow during the day. I stayed at my desk til 7 p.m. to avoid the terrible traffic
jam at 5. Driving out of the Works, I veered my Bug to the left through fresh snow, right past a stuck Buick spinning its wheels in the frozen ruts.

Dad, you win. I don't think I'd be as determined to 'just do it' if I had to contend with snow!!
